The War Podcast

House of cards

ّI talked to former Afghan police officer Col Mustafa Nooristani who tells us about the trials and tribulations of being a police officer in a country where corruption was rampant and the only way to survive honestly was through pure luck and even that wasn't enough sometimes. He spoke about the hope and dreams of the youth who wanted to serve their country and how the system failed them.

down the rabbit hole

Here I had a very candid conversation with David Katz, PHD, a former US Foreign Service Officer, who was in the thick of things through multiple regime changes in Afghanistan and brings a unique and realistic perspective to the historical lens of Afghanistan. David has spent a considerable chunk of his life dealing with Afghanistan throughout various regimes and turnovers and has developed a unique insight into all Afghan affairs.

The forgotten dreams

In my discussion with Kamel Karwan Mokamel, who spent most of his adult life outside Afghanistan as a refugee in Pakistan and then as a Canadian citizen due to imposed civil war in his country, we shared some common memories of war. He talked to me about the decisions driven by war that shaped his life to this day. Kamel was a first year medical student when he had to leave Afghanistan and that left a scar that he believes still hasn't healed.

Bittersweet homecoming

I talked to Murtaza Mohammadi here,  a young Afghan who was forced to migrate and leave everything behind twice before hitting the age of 40. He candidly shares his experience as a refugee who returned home only to be exiled again. Through his story, you will be introduced to Afghanistan with an authenticity that headlines don't allow and a pain that you can only experience when you have lost your home, your life and your future not once but twice and you still have to live with it.

when the dust cleared

Here I speak to Jason Criss Howk, a veteran, author and advocate. Jason leads @GFAfghanistan , an initiative that "aims to help the world understand Afghanistan and the needs of Afghan people".

Hanging up the uniform

On this episode, I talk to US Air Force veteran Erin Frescas about experiencing war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Learn from Erin's candid stories about the effects war has on veterans.
